Post-processing technology

1. Wire EDM

After SLM printing, the part is firmly bonded to the metal substrate, and wire EDM is the critical process for precisely separating the part from the substrate. Utilizing the high temperatures generated by pulsed electrical discharges, this method achieves minimal deformation and exceptional precision, enabling the machining of hard-to-cut materials such as titanium alloys, copper alloys, and specialty steels. At the same time, it removes most of the solid supports, thereby maximizing protection of the printed build surface, preventing impact‑induced damage, and delivering a qualified rough‑machined blank for subsequent operations.

2. Grinding and Polishing

The surface of an SLM‑built part exhibits a texture characteristic of melted powder particles, resulting in high surface roughness. Grinding is primarily used to remove support residues, flash, and burrs. Polishing encompasses processes such as mechanical polishing, sandblasting, and bright finishing, which reduce surface roughness and enable a variety of aesthetic finishes, including matte, high-gloss, and aged effects.

3. Finish Machining

3D printing can produce complex geometries, but critical features such as assembly holes, mating surfaces, and threaded holes cannot achieve high‑precision tolerances directly. By employing precision machining processes like CNC turning and milling to machine key dimensions, mating surfaces, and threaded holes, dimensional accuracy can be improved to ±0.02–0.05 mm, meeting industrial standards for assembly, sealing, and jointing.

4. Heat Treatment

During the SLM manufacturing process, rapid laser melting and cooling lead to significant residual stresses within the part, which can readily result in deformation, cracking, and dimensional instability. Mitigation strategies include stress-relief annealing, hot isostatic pressing (HIP), and solution treatment followed by aging.
